The fourth annual Thundies Sports Awards (presented by Al White Ford Lincoln) hosted by Thunder Radio and the Dennis Weaver Dream for Weave Foundation on Saturday did not disappoint.
A sold out crowd of 312 watched dozens of athletes pick up sports awards and nearly $30,000 in scholarships were handed out from the foundation for CHS athletes to pursue college and technical school education. A full list of award winner and scholarship recipients are below.
“The Thundies Awards were once again a spectacular night for our local athletes,” said Josh Peterson, owner of Thunder Radio. “We have formed a special relationship with them over the years and it is an honor to host them for a red-carpet night and help several of them out with scholarship funds. I know Dennis Weaver would be elated to see the impact we are having on the lives of so many athletes in our community.”
With this year’s contributions, the Dream for Weave Foundation has now hit $120,000 in contributions back to the community through scholarships and financial aid for families in need.
Former Lady Raider basketball standout and Lipscomb graduate Bella Vinson served as this year’s guest speaker – using her time to speak about her faith and offer advice to the athletes in attendance.
“Comparison is a thief of joy,” Vinson told the athletes in attendance. “The more you look left and right at what everyone else is doing the slower you will get where you want to go.
“In a way, I was putting my worth in my ability to put a ball in a basket, which is so silly to say but it’s true,” Vinson added when talking about her growing faith. “I know a lot of athletes struggle with that. As I grew closer to the Lord I realized it’s never meant to be about you. I was given this gift so I could glorify (God) and bring others closer to him. There is such a freedom that comes with (realizing) that.”
Pulling down top honors at this year’s event were seniors Jayden Carter and Paisley Campbell, who won the prestigious Dennis Weaver Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards. Coffee County Central Lady Raider basketball won the Dennis Weaver Team of the Year for the second straight year.
New to this year’s Thundies was the Robert Clutter Presidential Scholarship, honoring the late WMSR owner and Dream for Weave Foundation President who passed away July of 2024. This year’s award was given to Elsie Lazalier – a $2,000 scholarship for the 2025 Class Valedictorian.
Jon and Nicki Helms were given the Dennis Weaver Community Excellence Award for their work in the community. That award is sponsored by the Dusty Elam Foundation.
