School board fails to extend director Lawson’s contract; motion to terminate also fails

In a nearly three hour school board meeting on Monday, February 12, 2024, the Board voted down an option to extend the Dr. Charles Lawson’s Director contract.

After the failed vote, Board Member, Kathy Rose made a motion to vote to terminate the current contract without cause (due to the Board showing no confidence) and paying out the Director’s contract. This was also voted down.

Terry Harnden, Personal Finance teacher at Coffee County Central High School, (representing the Coffee County Teacher Advisory Council) presented for over an hour the results of a “Survey Monkey” survey that had recently been sent to all Coffee County School Employees.

Mr. Harnden said that survey dealt with the Coffee County School Budget, Policy and an evaluation of the Director of Schools. Of the over 800 surveys that were sent out, 120 were returned. All surveys returned showed a favorable results for Dr. Lawson.

Board Member Thomas Ballard had this to say to Mr. Harnden:

Lawson’s current contract expires July of 2025.
