Coffee County ran into a red hot McMinn Central team in the title game of the Lenoir City Christmas tournament – falling 69-33 Friday night.
McMinn knocked down a remarkable 13 3-pointers in the win to take the tournament title and even up the season record with the Lady Raiders – who beat them in the Bradley Central Thanksgiving Classic a month ago.
The Lady Raiders take second in the tournament – with wins over Alcoa and Kingston.
The guard pressure applied by McMinn’s Chargers gave Coffee County trouble getting off shots. The Lady Raiders trailed 30-14 at the break and never recovered.
A good portion of Coffee County’s 33 points came at the free throw line, where the Lady Raiders scored 16.
Jules Ferrell paced CHS with 13 points. Karina Bystry torched the Lady Raiders with 28 and Molly Massingale piled up 19.
The 36-point loss for the Lady Raiders was the worst point-differential since a 44-point loss to Lawrence County way back on January 26, 2016 – over a year before Joe Pat Cope was named head coach at CHS.
Coffee County falls to 15-3 on the season with the loss. The Lady Raiders will travel to Webb School for a girls only contest on Friday, January 5. That will be the final tune up before district play starts January 9 against Shelbyville.
