Back-to-back DRVC championships and a 14-game winning streak have naturally raised expectations around Westwood football, but head coach Matt Mueller said the focus this season isn’t on trying to replicate last year’s team. Instead, it’s about continuing the standard the Rockets have built while establishing an identity of their own.
Mueller said while this year’s Rockets may look different offensively than the previous two championship teams, the program’s emphasis on discipline and fundamentals will remain the same. He pointed to limiting mistakes and playing sound football as the foundation of Westwood’s recent success, saying those details often make the biggest difference on Thursday nights.
That same mindset carries into the Rockets’ approach each week. Mueller said the team’s message throughout practice is to “win the week,” refusing to overlook any opponent after learning valuable lessons during previous seasons.
As Rocket Nation prepares for another football season, Mueller said his greatest hope extends beyond wins and losses.
