Thursday, January 25, 2024, the City of Manchester issued the following warnings to its citizens:
Due to excessive rainfall, the city sewer is currently experiencing several overflows within the system. These areas include:
Skinner Flat Road
Spring Street Bridge
Dave King Park (near the railroad bridge)
Citizens should monitor that sewer clean out caps are in place and not broken or missing. These are often hit by lawn mowers and neglected to be repaired. The City of Manchester has even experienced some homeowners removing them to allow the water in their yard to drain into the sewer. This a direct violation of city codes. No storm water is purposefully allowed to enter the sanitary sewer system. This also includes roof downspouts, parking lot drains, etc.. Questions concerning this or to report a potential problem related to this, contact the Manchester Water & Sewer Department at 728-1273.
Discharges from these overflows consist, or likely consist, of untreated or partially treated sewage and waste. The public is advised to avoid contact with impacted water bodies for 48 hours after the discharge or overflow ceases due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.
