Coffee County Middle and Westwood Middle hooked up in a crosstown showdown Monday night at Coffee County Central High School – with the Coffee Middle girls and Westwood boys coming out on top.
CMS Lady Raiders 41, Westwood 28
A lopsided third quarter proved to be the undoing of what was otherwise a very competitive game.
Coffee Middle turned a 1 point halftime lead into a commanding advantage, outscoring the Lady Rockets 16-3 in the third quarter to take a 33-19 lead and eventually a 41-28 win.
The game was certainly closer than that for most of the night. Westwood got four 3-pointers from Jerzee Ferrell in the first half and eventually took a 16-15 lead midway through the second quarter. But Coffee Middle led 17-16 at the half and pulled away in the third. The Rockets were held without a field goal in the third period – all 3 points coming at the free throw line.
Coffee Middle leaned heavily on Adalyn Clark and Hayleigh Harris, both with 14 points in the win.
Ferrell led the Rockets with 12.
Westwood Rocket Boys 38, Coffee Middle 12
Westwood’s Zeke Jones burked a 3-pointer at the halftime horn to send Westwood to the locker room with a 10-point lead and the Rockets never looked back, holding CMS to just 5 second half points in a 38-12 rout.
Westwood led by just 1 after the first quarter: 6-5.
The Rockets leaned heavily on Mason Troxler in the paint. The big 8th grader racked up 20 points. Jones finished with 9.
Jaxon Pruitt paced Coffee Middle with 6 and Jude Golembiewski pitched in 5.
